It’s ‘imperative’ mail-in ballot issues get corrected, U.S. Attorney tells Luzerne County officials

  • Thursday, the Department of Justice launched an investigation in Luzerne County, PA that discovered nine ballots discarded, seven of which were opened. 
  • The U.S. Attorney David Freed sent a letter to Luzerne County elections officials outlining beginnings of an FBI investigation into the office’s practices – and warned them to correct issues that date back to the primary election. 
  • Seven of the nine ballots were cast for Donald Trump, the other two were unopened.

Google To Halt Political Ads After Polls Close, Amid Worries Over Delayed Results

  • Google has announced that it will no longer publish political ads after the polls close on Election Day, citing that the final results will likely be delayed due to mail-in voting. 
  • Google stated that it will notify advertisers when the policy is lifted, but that no ads referencing the 2020 election, candidates, or outcome will be run following close of the polls.

Pa. lawmakers promote CROWN Act legislation banning discrimination against natural hair styles

  • Days ago, the U.S. House passed legislation to provide federal protection from hair discrimination in schools and employment. 
  • PA lawmakers held a virtual news conference on Thursday to promote their own newly-passed legislation, called the CROWN Act. 
  • The CROWN Act passed Monday in the PA House, and ensures that people “cannot be discriminated against for choosing to wear their hair in such styles as Afros, braids, locs, twists, or knots. The acronym stands for Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.”
  • The bill awaits a vote in Senate. 

Pa. House falls short in effort to override Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of high schools sports bill

  • On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted 130-71 on an attempt to override Governor Wolf’s veto of House Bill 2787. 
  • The bill would give local public and private school officials the final say in whether or not to hold sports or extracurricular activities this school year. 
  • The bill would have also allowed schools to decide how many people could be in attendance. 

City

Philly is opening 17 early voting locations across the city. Here’s where.

  • Philadelphia officials approved a plan this past week to open 15 new satellite elections offices where voters will be able to request, receive, fill out, and submit a mail ballot in one stop. 
  • People will also be able to visit the offices and register to vote, request a mail ballot to take home, or drop off a completed ballot. 
  • Many are at public schools, and one is at the Liacouras Center at Temple University. 
  • Two permanent elections offices are open in City Hall and on Columbus Boulevard at Spring Garden Street. 

In Philly, another reprieve for tenants facing evictions

  • Philadelphia has once again postponed the date on which landlords will be able to resume evictions. 
  • This gives tenants two more weeks to get certified for the eviction moratorium still in effect by the Centers for Disease Control. 

Philadelphia Boutique’s Window Tribute To Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Drawing Crowds Of Admirers

  • A Rittenhouse Square boutique paid tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with an installation of RBG’s signature collar on several looks. 
  • The tribute also included photos and some of her most well-known quotes.
