My statement on restoration of $350,000 in funding to the African American Museum of Philadelphia: Black arts and culture matter

From Mustafa Rashed, President and CEO of Bellevue Strategies

“Thank you to Mayor Jim Kenney and Philadelphia City Council for restoring $350,000 in funding for the African American Museum in Philadelphia. On behalf of all the board, the community, and all the allies who worked tirelessly on this effort we want you to know we are extremely grateful.

Black arts and black culture matter. I cannot think of a time in recent memory when it was as important to give a voice to black communities and amplify black contributions to society as it is now. While some simply need to be reminded of the history of African Americans, many more need to be educated on that history and learn from the ground up. That history cannot be taught if we strip away funding from the institutions that exist to provide that education.”
