At today's session of the Philadelphia City Council, the legislative body unanimously approved Resolution 230706 which condemns the Hamas terror attacks in Israel and calls for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The passage of the resolution was met with fierce debate. Pro-Palestinian supporters attempted to drown out testimony with screaming and shouting whenever pro-Israel speakers approached the podium to speak in support of the resolution. 

Highlight of Introductions: 

  • Councilmember Harrity introduced an ordinance amending Chapter 9-2300 of The Philadelphia code to provide greater protections for displaced contract workers. 

  • Councilmember Thomas introduced a resolution honoring and congratulating the Champions of the Week, Student Activists Against Sexual Assault, for their continued determination and advocacy towards sexual violence awareness and prevention at Temple University. 

  • Councilmember Jones introduced a resolution authorizing the Joint Committees on Education and Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs to hold public hearings to examine the cost and liabilities for the School District and the Department of Parks and Recreation to ease the barriers of access to youth sports.

  • Councilmember Lozada introduced a resolution recognizing Friday, October 20, 2023, as Community Media Day and Honoring Public, Educational, and Government Access Channels in the City of Philadelphia.

  • Councilmember Lozada also introduced a resolution recognizing and honoring the heroism of police officer Richard Mendez, an exceptional public servant, who gave everything in his duty to the City of Philadelphia.

  • Councilmember Brooks introduced a resolution declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Philadelphia.

  • Councilmember Bass introduced a resolution recognizing Governor Shapiro's Executive Order to create a Behavioral Health Council in which state leaders, local governments, and community providers join forces to design and implement a statewide action plan with the aim to address how to effectively deliver exceptional mental health and addiction care services.

  • The Public Safety Committee will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 2:00 P.M., to hear testimony on Bill No. 230510 and Resolution No. 230640.

  • The Finance Committee will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 10:00 A.M., to hear testimony on Bill No. 230654

  • The Environment Committee will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 1:00 P.M., to hear testimony on Resolution No. 230328
